- Here is what we have:
- A bunch of Sparc stations running SunOS 4.1, and X11R5 under xdm.
-
- Here is what I want:
- I'd like to run X11R5 xdm on each station, with the default
- server being the vanilla R5 X. The user can specify (either
- by a file in her directory, or by hitting, say, F1 instead
- of RET at login) that she wants to run OW3. THe X server
- would be terminated and the xnews server started for that
- session. On logout, xnews would terminate and the X server
- would be restarted.
-
- How I'd like to do it:
- In Login and/or Setup, change the Xserver config file to use xnews.
- Tell xdm to kill server.
- Tell xdm to reread config file and start new server (HUP signal?)
- At Logout, kill the xnews server (if it's running) and tell
- xdm to restart X server, if necessary.
-
- Questions:
- Will this work?
- Is there a better way?
- Is this inadvisable?
- I have heard of a security leak running xnews from R5 xdm as root:
- is this a problem?
- How does the OW3 xnews server respond to signals?
-
-
- Please respond by email to glaubman@msri.org. Thanx and cheers.
