- Well if you can get a student discount (take Badminton 101 at your local
- college :-) a basic NeXTstation Turbo Color will run about $5900, if you
- get the best discount you can (your mileage may vary). It comes with a
- 17" color monitor (16 bit) and 16Mb of memory and a 250Mb drive. You can
- put an external Acropolis 1.2G drive on it for $1995. So your total would
- be just about $8000. Speedwise, they're supposed to be just behind a
- Sun SPARC II, about 25 MIP's (or so I'm told...)
-
- As for software, there's a PD version of X11R5 out on the archives somewhere
- and there are 2 or 3 companies that sell X-windows for the NeXT (300 to 500
- dollars I think). I've had a mono NeXTstation for almost two years now and
- I've never had any trouble compiling anything off the net (other than playing
- with makefiles and the occasional header or two). The NeXT is pretty much
- straight BSD (expect named pipes aren't supported) If you could scrape up
- an extra 500, you could get the CD-ROM bundle deal that is currently
- being offered...you get an upgrade to NeXTStep 3.0 plus the CD-ROM (on
- which future upgrades will come, I understand). The upgrade isn't that
- important to you, as you'd get 3.0 with your machine, but it is a SCSI
- CD-ROM drive.
-
- Hope this helps...
