  11. I've been volunteered to set up a uucp dialup node on an Ultrix system
  12. at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique at the end of this
  13. month or early September.  I've never set eyes on a (modern) Vax, let
  14. alone Ultrix, but have experience with SunOS and SCO Xenix, so I'd like
  15. to get a few reassuring words before setting out.

  17. My intention is to set up normal point to point uucp dialup to link the
  18. university in Maputo with one of our dialup systems (a Sun ELC) here at
  19. Rhodes University, and to install smail-3.1.26 as the "smart" mail
  20. transport with elm and pine as the user interfaces.  Are there any
  21. tricks or subtleties with getting these packages working under Ultrix?
  22. Should I be looking at a different approach?  What's the Ultrix
  23. documentation like?  Does Ultrix support the 'compress' and
  24. 'uncompress' utilities? (I've been caught flat footed once before with
  25. an NCR :-()  Anybody got an Ultrix kermit excutable they'd allow me to
  26. FTP from their site?  And, once the email link is working, the guys up
  27. there will be pretty much on their own as regards Ultrix support - are
  28. there any (low volume) mailing lists they should keep an eye on?
  29. Usenet news isn't really an option for them at this stage, unless I
  30. install something like the recently posted 'bsnews' (boot strap news)
  31. for a tiny feed.

  33. The email addressing structure will be something like
  34. "user@dzowo.uem.mz" - where 'dzowo' is the node name of the relevant
  35. Ultrix system, 'uem' stands for Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, and 'mz'
  36. is the ISO-3166 abbreviation for Mozambique.  I'm busy organizing name
  37. servers, setting up MX forwarders (kudu.ru.ac.za) and getting the MZ
  38. domain registered with the NIC, so as to bypass any uucp bangpath
  39. stupidity or uucp map craziness.

  41. There are apparently Vax systems running VMS on other parts of the
  42. campus - is there some way of transferring mail between these systems
  43. using something like uucp?  i.e. is there a VMS uucp package?  Is it
  44. domain smart?  Does it work?
