- /etc/utmp is hosed. This can result from a variety of conditions --
- usually X-based, but not necessarily so. I believe there are utmp
- editors out there in the alt.sources archives -- utmp isn't a plain
- text file. Or one could just "cat /dev/null > /etc/utmp" and it'll
- rebuild itself.
