- I only got one response from a user with experience with DEC C. He is
- generally happy with the compiler but for his application, DEC C
- generates code that runs slightly slower than the regular C compiler.
- A couple of other users also said that they use "gcc".
-
- If there is anyone else who has any experience with this compiler,
- please respond, I'd really like to know if this is the compiler that
- increased the Specmark rating of 5000/200 from 20 to 23.5 and the
- 5000/125 from 16 to 19?? These speedups were announced last
- December, and referred to as obtainable using a "future compiler
- available in Spring". (I also don't think that the speedups referred to
- the Fortran compiler, since the Fortran 3.X compiler had been out for
- quite some time when the announcement was made, and it was the 3.0
- compiler which gave a 15% or so improvement over the 2.X.)
-
- Response from DECfolk (who have gone out of their way recently to
- answer any question) highly appreciated! (I really wanted to use
- the term Fred Avolio prefers people to refer to DEC employees,
- I know he didn't like DECfriends I used once, what was it??...)
-
- Thank You

- My original post follows:
-
- I am still unclear about DEC C eventhough it's been released for
- quite some time. I understand the license for it comes with
- Ultrix, one only needs to purchase the media, and also that
- DEC C is an ANSI C compiler.
-
- 1. Is this compiler ever going to replace the regular C
- compiler on Ultrix? If so then why not include the media
- in the Ultrix distribution so that people will learn about
- it and start using it? Right now it's a very well kept secret!
-
- 2. Does it use the GEM backend like the Fortran compiler? If so
- does it generate faster code (like Fortran 2.0 --> 3.0)?
- If not, then are there plans to move it to GEM?
-
- 3. Is this the same compiler as on Alpha OSF/1? Will Alpha also
- offer two C compilers?
-
- I'd just like to know if it's a good idea to get this compiler and make it
- available to our users, unless there are factors I am overlooking??
-
- Thanks
