- I want to stay in the same thread but go back to an earlier subject, that's
- why I kept the text of Steve and Eric's colloquy. In this same thread a
- couple of weeks ago I asked what had happened to the bake off. The discussion
- has wandered in several directions since, e.g. the above, but the silence with
- regard to the bake off has been deafening.
-
- Let me make my questions easier to understand by explaining what I understand.
- I thought that Eric threw out the gauntlet a couple of months ago to ask
- hardware vendors to provide their top-of-the-line fire breathers so that he
- could set them down side by side and tell sysv386 readers what equipment does
- the best job on the same work mix. If I'm wrong about that then my questions
- should be ignored (but somebody tell me I'm wrong so I'll shut up). A couple
- of weeks ago Eric posted another article asking for net.persuasion to coax
- Dell into joining in the bake off, apparently they had declined his invitation.
- There was a lot of conversation about that, including some needlessly rude
- comments directed at Conor Cahill. I brought that up to jog memories, not to
- tear off scabs.
-
- I asked then and I ask now, what's the status of the bake off? I was led to
- believe it was to be done by now. When I last followed up I said the same
- thing but nobody said it was even underway yet, much less finished. So let
- me try again. What's the status of the bake off? What vendors are in it?
- What models of motherboards, video cards, disk controllers are being or will
- be evaluated? What tests are going to be run? Are there any interim results
- worth mentioning? When will it be done? When will the results be posted?
-
- I suppose that my remarks and questions could be misconstrued as twisting
- Eric's tail, so be it. I'm not impatient (well maybe a little) that it's
- not done, I'm impatient because I followed up to a black hole. Has there
- not been enough time to collect the vendors' equipment? Was some of it
- broken and therefore delayed its evaluation? I can't believe that Eric's
- too busy to tell us what's going on, he has been quite vocal answering
- other items. So what's the score? I'm going to keep asking until someone
- answers.
