- | The NEC 5FG 17" monitor seems to be the best choice for a PC since it
- | supports resolutions of 1024x768 and 1280x1024. An example of the confusing
- | advice that I've seen comes from the July 1992 issue of Computer Shopper:
- | "For 800x600 computing, a 16" display is a must. At 1024x768 and beyond,
- | you'll need, at a minimum, a 20" display." This is rediculous. I want to
- | buy a higher resolution monitor because I want sharper graphics with fewer
- | jagged lines. I have no desire to simply magnify the crude graphics that is
- | produced by lower resolution displays! Furthermore, a larger display should
- | provide more real estate for applications, yet every time I see MS Windows
- | running on a large display (in a vendor's showroom, for example) there is
- | a sinlge MS Windows application taking up the whole screen!s

- In this case, CS is right, or mostly so. There are two limiting
- factors, the dot pitch and the human eye. Consider this chart, and
- remember this is viewing area not case size.
-
- Horizontal width for 1024 pixels
-
- <-- inches -->
- pitch width diag
- .41 16.5 21
- .31 12.5 16
- .28 11.3 14
- .24 9.7 12
-
- Now, even if you spend the money for a very fine dot pitch, you will
- find that the human eye limits you, and you have to get very close to
- the display to read reasonable text. 1024 on a good 15 inch display is
- useful, but if the price were right I would go to 20.
-
- Note that those horible sounding .41 dot pitch monitors have enough
- pixels (just) for 1024x768 on a 20in monitor, and if you get a buy on
- one and want to sit back from it, it will be satisfactory. For any other
- size and use I wouldn't touch one.

- I admit that when I was in school I wrote COBOL. But I didn't compile.
