- In recent issues of PC Magazine and Computer Shopper I've seen some
- confusing advice on higher resolution monitors for a PC. My goal is to
- buy a monitor for a PC that is about the same size as the one I use
- on a Sun SparcStation 2 at the office, and that supports at least the
- resultion that the Sun monitor does. The Sun monitor meaures 16"
- diagonally, and supports a resolution of 1024x900 pixels.
-
- The NEC 5FG 17" monitor seems to be the best choice for a PC since it
- supports resolutions of 1024x768 and 1280x1024. An example of the confusing
- advice that I've seen comes from the July 1992 issue of Computer Shopper:
- "For 800x600 computing, a 16" display is a must. At 1024x768 and beyond,
- you'll need, at a minimum, a 20" display." This is rediculous. I want to
- buy a higher resolution monitor because I want sharper graphics with fewer
- jagged lines. I have no desire to simply magnify the crude graphics that is
- produced by lower resolution displays! Furthermore, a larger display should
- provide more real estate for applications, yet every time I see MS Windows
- running on a large display (in a vendor's showroom, for example) there is
- a sinlge MS Windows application taking up the whole screen!s
-
- Am I to conclude from this advice that Microsoft Windows cannot take advantage
- of the higher resultion by using more pixels per character (for example)? At
- a minimum, I'd like to work with characters that are as clear as the ones
- defined by the 10x20 font on the 16" Sparc display under X windows (I can't
- seem to find a font like this that will work in the Terminal application in
- MS Windows).
-
- What about ISC UNIX? Will it do a better job? Has anyone been able to use
- 1280x1024 under X windows with this UNIX in such a way that the X applications
- are at least as clear as they would be on a Sparc display?
-
- Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
