- I strongly recommend that the data grade tapes be used with the 8500
- drives.
-
- We have 2 8500 drives on our Epoch-1 used very heavily for backups every
- night. Before this January, they were 8200's; with the 8200's, the
- video grade tapes worked fine -- we never had any trouble writing or reading
- any tapes.
-
- After upgrading to the 8500's -- to get 5GB per tape -- and not incidentally
- adding 10i robots as well, we found increasing numbers of hard and soft
- tape errors being reported (either explicitly, or just observed from
- very slow write speeds -- induced by error-rewrite-error-rewrite cycles).
- Note that we never had any problems reading any tape once written.
-
- We have converted to all data-grade tapes (well, Sony QG -- Computer Grade),
- and have seen the error incidence drop to essentially zero. This
- significantly improves our tape write speed, and the system reliability
- as well.
-
- We shopped around for tape prices; we found a distributor for the QG's
- with a $15/tape, quantity 10, price. Since we were paying $6/tape for
- the video grades, it is a hit, but certainly not too bad, all things
- considered.
