- My SLIP problems get more interesting....
-
- Per Jim Jagielski's suggestion I got and installed the bpf (Berkeley
- Packet Filter) so I could peek at the packet headers on my supposedly
- working SLIP connection. [For those who missed the initial post, I
- can dial-up my SLIP server and start the protocol on both ends with
- no error messages but then nothing (ping, telnet, ftp) works.]
-
- The interesting part is that tcpdump (part of bpf) shows me all the
- packet headers arriving at the server quite nicely. When I then try
- to telnet to the server it even shows my outbound telnet request.
-
- BUT NOTHING HAPPENS? I get no response from the server. When I try
- to ping my system (the SLIP client) from the server I also get no response.
-
- "netstat -r" on both ends seems to show correct routing tables (the server
- knows the route to the client and vice-versa.)
- "ifconfig sl0" on the client and "ifconfig ni0" on the server (an
- HP9000/382 running HP/UX 8.0) show identical netmasks, with the interface
- "up" on both ends.
-
- I can only assume that I have some table entry wrong somewhere such that
- the SLIP client (MacIIci, A/UX 3.0, 8mb/160mb) doesn't recognize packets
- for itself (could it really be that simple? :-) )
-
- At this point any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
- The SLIP setup was supposed to make my job easier but I have already
- spent much more time trying to make it work then I could ever hope to save
- by using it :-) but I'd really like to know what's wrong since other folks
- seem to be using it with no problems.
-
- Thanks in advance.....
