- Yes, it works to use a dialup modem w/SLIP on the RS-6000, but it is
- a real pain - ibm's slip is nearly reaching notorious status. IBM's
- sl;;ip does not support CSLIP (but,then again, most PC's don't either)
- and it is a real problem on the RS-6000 side to set up multiple slip
- interfaces. If the RS-6000 is the transmitter and there is another RS-6000
- as the receiver (at least in my config) my line goes down after about 4MB
- have gone across it.
-
- I run at 19.2 through an AT&T datakit modem - 19.2K straight rate, w/no
- compression and my 220 will crash after 4MB have been sent or received
- through the interface to a 320H. Typing, as I am doing now, sends an
- INCREDIBLE flury of activity across the line and interactive performance
- is TERRIBLE during an ftp, even through I tuned my MTU's way down (but not
- too far!).
-
- I have tried a PC to RS-6000 slip at 38400 over a direct in-building
- link and it worked okay, but I didn't try X. On the 220 <-> 320 setup,
- it takes about a minute for info to come up and about three seconds to pull
- down a Motif menu (the first time, better after that).
-
- Sorry for the mostly subjective information. I have tried one of those new
- $699.00 Qume X-terminals over a 9600 modem (running at 19.2K w/compresssion)
- to an RS-6K at the other end and it is a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better solution
- than the slip (about 10 times as fast) - I now have one as my backup0 unit
- in case my 220 's slip goes down (or my wife is working on it :> )!
