  21. I have worked with a Best Power Technology UPS and a RISC System/6000
  22. model 520.  The UPS came with source code for several Unix variants,
  23. but nothing specifically for AIX 3.x.  The generic system v code
  24. worked like a charm without modifications.  Basically it is a
  25. background process that constantly checks a serial port.  When the UPS
  26. signals that it has switched to internal power, a shell script runs
  27. which informs all users of imminent shutdown within x minutes... then
  28. runs the shutdown command.  All very simple and easy to customize for
  29. your particular setup by altering the shell script that the UPS
  30. process calls.  The particular UPS from Best that I installed was very
  31. feature-laden.  It keeps a history of power fluctuations, voltage
  32. histograms, and other related data internally, which can be recovered
  33. by sending commands through the serial port, much like communicating
  34. with modem control features.

  37. RISC System/6000.
