- We have been writing in-house applications for several years on AT&T 3B2 and
- 3B1 systems running, of course, SVR3 (SVR2-1/2 for 3B1, I guess). For obvious
- reasons we have to move to new technology, and we're evaluating several
- options, one of which is the RS/6000.
-
- In porting a sample suite of our applications, we encountered a number of
- inconsistencies between SVR3 and AIX that we found troubling (join and od were
- broken, we encountered warnings about sort -u being unreliable, etc.). We care
- about these things because we run mission critical business applications on
- these systems, many of which depend on shell scripts that use more Un*x
- commands than we have time to test individually. IBM is offering a very
- attractive package in a number of other areas, but we have concerns about AIX
- functionality and SVR3 compatibility. We'd really appreciate some help from
- people in the community in deciding how valid our concerns are.
-
- Our questions for folks who have experience porting their SVR3 apps to AIX:
-
- What problems did you encounter in recompiling your C programs with AIX XL C
- and linking in AIX libraries?
-
- Have you experienced AIX utilities producing incorrect or unexpected output
- when compared with their SVR3 equivalents? Which utilities had these problems?
- How severe were these problems?
-
- Some of the problems we had were related to our use of dumb ASCII VDTs, which
- AIX doesn't appear to support as well as graphics consoles and X terminals.
- Have any other users of dumb VDTs experienced special problems with AIX
- utilities or tools?
-
- For service, how responsive has IBM been in fixing hardware problems? Has
- AIX support been good in resolving OS software issues? Have patches been
- offered promptly, and did those patches find their way into the next release?
-
- . . . And just for SNA gurus: we use our Un*x boxes to connect to an ES/9000
- (heh, heh). If we buy RS/6000s, we'll use IBM's SNA support package for AIX,
- including 3270 emulation and LU6.2. Have you either used or evaluated this
- product? Have you found it robust, easy to use, stable, etc.?
-
- Thanks.
