- I've had to use disk quota when I was doing system management. I never
- had any particular trouble with it, but it was probably a V3 or maybe
- V4.0 when I last had to use quotas. My only complaint at the time was
- that the initial quotacheck(8) done on the file systems that had quotas
- turned on, took a long time. Since this quotacheck(8) gets done at
- reboot it can look like the reboot is hung. I don't recall if the
- procedure was CPU or I/O bound.

-
- I don't know of any bugs, so personal opinion is more likely. I do
- know that using disk quota on NFS mounted file systems is kind of
- strange because the client is the system doing the quota management
- for it's users. I don't if there are any sort of locking problems
- associated with many clients trying to update the same quota file.

- If you haven't tried it a first step is to publically report who the
- big users are. You get one of three results.
-
- 1. No change and you turn on quotas anyway.
- 2. Peer pressure to be more careful about space and you don't have
- to use quotas.
- 3. Competition to see who can use the most and you turn on quotas
- anyway.
