  14. I wrote a LaTeX document with the "letter" style in which I did a few
  15. environments defined by \newtheorem.  In some of those I put \labels
  16. and then tried to refer to them with \ref.  Now I just got undefined
  17. reference warnings when compiling the document.  I played around a bit
  18. and just changing the document style to "report" (and removing the
  19. \heading and \closing stuff etc.) was sufficient for me to get my
  20. references OK.

  22. I looked in latex.tex and it seems it defines default values for
  23. theorem numbering and does a \refstepcounter as it should and couldn't
  24. find anywhere in letter.sty where this is shut off - it does
  25. *something* with jobname.aux, so it doesn't just ignore the file.
