  16. I take it, then, that the "workstation console" driver will (at least in
  17. SunOS 5.x, for some value of "x"), figure out whether the PROM monitor
  18. is capable of being handed 8-bit characters or not and, if so, not strip
  19. output to 7 bits?

  21. (Older PROMs will blow up if handed characters with the 8th bit set,
  22. which is why the "workstation console" driver has traditionally stripped
  23. characters to 7 bits before handing them to the PROM.)
