  13.      Can someone give me a hand?  I have a SPARC-1e and I can't get it to
  14. boot up.  It checks out fine on all of the diagnostic checks.  I don't
  15. have a console for it, I am running it from ttya.  My input and output
  16. devices are set to ttya.  The problem I am having is that I have a 150M
  17. SCSI tape drive connected to it.  I have SunOS 4.0.3 Sun4e and I have
  18. SunOS 4.1.1 Sun4.  When I do b st()vmunix, here is what happens.  On the
  19. 4.0.3 tape, it goes to a prompt that says, "Boot:" I've tried inputting
  20. everything imaginable here and nothing happens.  I can't CTR-C CTRL-D,
  21. ESC, etc out of it.  I have to reboot.  When I try b st()vmunix with the
  22. 4.1.1 tapes, it says, "The file just loaded does not appear to be executable."
  23. At any rate, it's very aggrivating having a really expensive Forth interpreter.
  24. I have some possibilities as to what might be wrong with it but no real
  25. way to figure out if that is the problem or not.  Here is a list of
  26. what I thought would be the most likely things to be awry.

  28. A) My SCSI doesn't have a termintor on the line.  I _think_ there _might_
  29.    be a terminator built into the tape drive.  Would non-termination cause
  30.    these errors?
  31. B) I don't have my HD connect to my SCSI cable.  As yet, I don't have a way
  32.    to do that.  It's a MAC drive and uses a SCSI that has the same Pin-Outs
  33.    as my SCSI on my SPARC-1e in function but it is a totally different 
  34.    kind of connector and I haven't built a conversion cable yet.
  35. C) I built the SCSI going to my Tape Drive.  Could it be malfunctioning?
  36. D) My tape drive is fried.  Unlikely because it seems to read properly and
  37.    it does actually appear to run some sort of program from the 4.0.3 tape.
  38. E) 4Meg of RAM just isn't enough to boot vmunix.  (very unlikely, though I
  39.    have used VMS on a VAX before. :)
  40. F) There are some more test programs that I should run on the Forth interpreter
  41.    to try and find out more information but I don't have the programs.
  42. G) **MOST LIKELY** I'm clueless and doing something stupid.

  44. Okay, any last info I can think of...  It's running on the SPARC-1e Sparc-
  45. Engine card with 2 serial, keyboard, ethernet, SCSI, 4M RAM, etc.
  46. The tape drive has a little dubious setting thing on the back which is
  47. set to 4.  The temperature and humidity in the room should be well
  48. within tolerance.  I have a PDP-11 running nearby and I am assuming that
  49. they are much more fickle...
  50.      Anyways, any help would be really greatly appreciated.  Thanks in
