  15. I'm running a SPARCstation IPX with SUNOS 4.1.2

  17. My question concerns soundtool.

  19. Why is the reproduction so awful ? I connected a CD played to the sound input
  20. port, sampled a couple of my favourite tracks with soundtool and saved them
  21. on disk. No problems.

  23. However, when played back via soundtool they sound dreadful - like a an old fashioned 
  24. transistor radio.

  26. It would be reallly nice to have decent quality sound on disk.

  29. I wonder if any of you SUN guru's can tell me why the repro is so bad ?

  31. It occurs to me that it is either:

  33. 1. The sample rate is too slow, although 8000 times a second sounds a lot to me.
  34.    (I rebuilt soundtool with the #define governing the sample rate set to 25,000 
  35.     but it made no difference)

  37. 2. If the values are stored as integers (8 bit bytes), then there only 256
  38.    possibilities, for the whole frequency range in any case.
  39.  
  40. Anyway, if anyone has an explanation, solution, or some alternative software
  41. that will perform better please let me know.
