- I can recommend you the RSS600 Mass storage system from Metrum
- Information Storage (formerly known as Honeywell Test
- Instruments). This system is able to store six terabytes of data
- in a manner that presents the files as a large UNIX filesystem.
- The RSS600 stores information on the data quality tapes with a
- standard VHS form factor. The tapes are written with the same
- method as Exabyte 8mm tapes. Tapes are stored in one of two
- six-sided silos containing 50 tapes per side. These 600 tapes can
- be inserted into one of the three read/write drives by a robot
- controlled by the SUN server. Each tape holds up to 10.4 GB of
- data. Transfer rate is from 1 to 2 Megabytes/s
-
- This system is used in the Data Management Center of the
- Incorporated Research Institute on Seismology (IRIS DMS). I got
- this information from the DMC Director.
