- | The attempt to upgrade our IRIS4D/70GT to IRIX4.01 has left me
- | frustrated and stranded. I am posting the story hoping that some
- | kind soul out there will be able to help me...
- |
- | When we ordered the upgrade we were told that SGI has switch
- | over to CD-ROM as the distribution media and in order to get
- | the upgrade on a tape suitable for our machine we need to pay
- | extra. When the tape arrived our machine couldn't read it and
- | it turned out that it was meant for QIC150 drive while we got
- | QIC24. Now, the sales engineer says that to install the new
- | operating system we need to invest in either a QIC150 drive
- | or a CD-ROM reader-
-
- The sales engineer is wrong; please let him know that ASAP.
- QIC-24 tape is still available (or was the last time I checked;
- maybe they have pulled this, but if so, it wasn't announced,
- and would be a major mistake; there are many customers in your
- position). Note that CD-ROM is *not* supported officially on
- your system!
-
- | Since our IRIS is connected to a SUN by TCP/IP I am looking
- | into the possibility of using its tape drive or CD-ROM drive
- | to install the software on the IRIS. How do I read the content
- | of the high density tape into a directory on the IRIS using the
- | drive on the sun? Are the formats compatible? Any help or
- | suggestions will be highly appreciated.
-
- You don't need to. Simply specify the remote tape as the installation
- device. Most SunOS versions support the remote tape interface (/dev/rmt).
- *However*, there is a nasty little problem in that the tape is byte
- swapped, so you have to do a bit of hacking to replace /etc/rmt on
- the sun by a program that starts the old /etc/rmt, but passes the
- data commands through dd conv=swab. Pretty messy all around. I'd
- just get the QIC-24 tape.
