- Sorry for posting this here, but the reply address was bad, and I
- didn't save the original...
- =============================
-
- It sounds like the MVax isn't positioning the tape as expected.
-
- Some revs of Exabyte firmware don't work too well on SGI systems,
- but most do (aside from the 8500, where there are literally 100's
- of firmware revs...).
-
- The easiest way to move it to an SGI system is to buy an external
- chassis with power supply (typically around $75 at large computer
- stores) designed for 5 1/4" drives. Hook it up to one of the SGI
- systems external SCSI connector (has a centronics 'D' connector),
- making sure that the cable is terminated at the Exabyte end (either
- with the same terminator, or terminators on the drive itself).
-
- I personally prefer tar over dump, because with dump there is no way
- to verify that the backup is actually good, just that it is readable,
- and that the directory info at the front is good.
-
- Many people like bru, because it has more extensive checksumming, but
- it is also slower and consumes more tape.
-
- Finally, SGI is now selling (just about to sell?) Legato's Networker
- product, and several of the multimachine production nets at SGI are
- using it and seem quite happy with it. For backing up a number of
- systems, that kind of thing is probably the most appropriate, but is
- of course an extra cost product.
-
- Most people around here use tar, and put multiple tape files on the
- tape, one per host, or use NFS to back up all the hosts in a single
- tar file. They usually combine that with find -newer (bru has a builtin
- incremental option) to backup only new files 4 days a week. THere
- have been several scripts posted to comp.sys.sgi and other newsgroups
- for doing this kind of thing, so you can probably find them in the
- archives.
