- Me: "Hello, SGI/Warner Bros. TAC? I'd like to order an
- Illudium-Q 36 Explosive Space Modulator for my 310 VGX..."
-
- (They ask for my shipping address, system serial number, have Daffy
- Duck call me back, abuse me a little on the phone,... you know,
- the usual stuff.)
-
- Here's the deal: We have a 310 VGX which is a charter member of Satan's
- Congregation. We bought it last September, I believe, basic warranty, etc.
- We had trouble with it for about the first month or two, then it got into
- the Christmas spirit and ran beautifully. Then came that New Years Day
- Hangover... "Oh, well, we'll upgrade to 4.0.1!" Didn't help in the long
- run. Call the TAC. TAC says, "Bug in 4.0.1, wait for 4.0.5!" Okay, wait
- for 4.0.5. Receive 4.0.5. Install 4.0.5. Call TAC. ... Stay Tuned.

- Maybe this is a thinly-veiled cry for techno-therapy, but HELP!
-
- The machine dumps core on 'ls', 'tset', 'sendmail', 'pandora', 'oawk'
- 'endsession', '4Dwm', and a plethora of other processes. I swapped memory
- simms 'til the anti-static wrist strap finally bore a hole in my wrist.
- It will arbitrarily decide to not export the nfs exported file systems.
- Memory Faults. Bus Errors. With no other explanations. Just Cores.
- I even have problems in the miniroot. And 'hinv'-ing in the monitor.
- There's no consistent pattern to the problem that is visible to me.
- But it's most definitely NOT system software anymore. I reinstalled
- everything in the proper order. It builds fine when it wants to.
-
- I waited patiently for 4.0.5, but there comes a time when patience begets
- abuse. Now I feel abused. 4.0.5 does not solve my problems, but at least
- now I can verify that to the people at the TAC. Could some kind
- SGI.Net.Soul discuss with me possible problems, or do I dump this particular
- machine on Ed's front yard and make a planter out of it?
