  10. We recently purchased a Maxtor XT-8760EH hard drive, simialr to the 
  11. XT-8760E that has given us no trouble for almost two years. The new
  12. drive, however, works great until the second time we try to mount it.
  13. At this point, it tells us that "The mirror copies of the FAT don't 
  14. match" and the drive does not mount.

  16. I don't know the structure of a Novell disk, but the drive is not mirrored,
  17. so I suppose it has two copies of the FAT like a DOS disk does.

  19. What makes it really wierd is that VREPAIR finds problems completely randomly.
  20. Even if I don't write the corrections to the disk, one time it will find 64
  21. errors, the next time 128, and the next will find no problems. (This happened
  22. once, the errors aren't always in "computer" increments.) Even an empty drive
  23. will find problems with free blocks not marked as bad or used and even the
  24. root directory itself. VREPAIR will find no problems and the drive will mount
  25. about 20-25% of the time.

  27. Background info:
  28. Netware 3.11 on a CompuAdd 325 (a 25Mhz 386)
  29. The XT-8760 is a ESDI drive of approx. 625 MB and is Novell certified
  30. CompuAdd HardCache ESDI controller with 4MB cache (has worked great with the 
  31.     previous XT-8760 drive)
  32. The new drive will contain one unsegmented volume
  33. The old drive continues to work fine
  34. The old drive came pre-formatted
  35.  
  36. What we've tried:
  37. Low-level format with the HardCache controllers FMT program (tried this twice)
  38. Format and surface check with INSTALL (tried this twice)
  39. VREPAIR (tried this about 20 times)
  40. Called the vendor, Hard Drives International
  41.     Though not unhelpful, they are a DOS shop and suggested we call
  42.     Novell (er, our reseller). They will replace the drive if we 
  43.     want, though. (It took long enough to get in the first place.)

  45. Any pointers will be appreciated (Insight to the "mirror copies of the FAT
  46. don't match" message, problems with the new 8760EH drive as opposed to the 
  47. 8760E drives, low-level format procedures)
