- This is probably a FAQ, but I'm new to this group... so here goes.
-
- I've got a Novell 3.11 network with 486 servers. I've got a Tektronix Phaser
- III printer attached to a parallel port on a 286 print server running
- rprinter (used to be a 386, results weren't significantly different).
-
- I'm getting around 4000 bytes per second throughput to the printer, which
- leaves it *very* hungry. It is idling along, twiddling its thumbs. Now,
- I've written assembler software that can dump 100-200 Kbytes per second to
- an LPT port on an *XT*. 4K is pretty atrocious! It takes 20 minutes just to
- send a 4MB postscript file to the printer!
-
- I've also connected HP3si, HP3 and other printers this way, and they all
- get similarly poor performance.
-
- Question: what is the highest performance way to connect a parallel printer
- to a Novell 3.11 network? Is there something I can tweak? Is there a third
- party print server software package that will work better? An NLM maybe???
- I could go to a fast 386 or 486 for the print server, but it would only go
- maybe 4-5 times faster. I'm looking for a lot more than that if possible.
