- Summary: Should Pserver.vap work with ELS II (V2.15c)

- We have been running a five node ELS II (V2.15c) network for 3 years with
- very few problems. The fileserver is an Everex Step 386DX/33 with 4MB.
- Printing is to an Epson FX85 on the server's lpt1 and an HP IIISi on the
- server's com1. Using core printing this works well. Recently, I tried to
- add a third network printer to a workstation using pserver.vap (v1.22) and
- rprinter (also v1.22). Using the latest pconsole from putil2.zip I created
- a new queue and printserver assigned the queue to the printserver and defined
- the printer as remote lpt1 using defaults of irq7 and 3kb buffer. I installed
- pserver.vap in \system and rebooted the server. The server console prompted for
- the server name which I gave it and all seemed well. So I launched rprinter on
- the workstation and it came up fine and knew the name of the pserver and queue.
- I then tried to nprint to the new queue. Nprint accepted the queue name and
- said it was spooling the file. The printer just sat there and did nothing for
- ten minutes before printing the first line of the file. It continued to print
- at the rate of aproximately one line every ten minutes. The workstation, by
- the way, running the rprinter was a 386dx/20 (1988 Mylex MB, Ami bios, Chips
- chipset, 1MB of RAM). The printer was a Panasonic KX1091. Psc and pconsole
- showed the queue as active and printing and that the job was 0.24% done. At
- the time of the test only the two workstations mention above were logged in
- and neither was running any applications. There were no TSR's running on
- the workstation with rprinter except ipx and netx (the latest versions from
- dosup5.) Dos 5.0 was loaded high with highmem.sys but ipx, netx and rprinter
- were loaded low. Shell.cfg contained spx connections = 50 and local printers
- = 0. I tried increasing spx connections to 100 but no improvement was seen.
- I tried local printers = 1 but that didn't help. Throughout this I still had
- core printing enabled to the 2 printers on the file server.
- I theorized that pserver wasn't supposed to co-exist with core printing
- so I reconfigured the filserver to have no core printing. I deleted all the
- queues and pservers and created a new pserver serving 3 queues (one for each
- printer). With this configuration only the Epson FX85 on the server's lpt1
- worked properly. The rprinter attached printer still printed 1 line per 10
- minutes. The laser on the server's com1 also seemed to be printing at about
- 1 line per 10 minutes ( I didn't wait 7+ hours for the first page to come out
- but after 20 minutes pconsole said that the job was .24% completed (it was a
- 45 line file.) At this point I gave up and reverted to core printing which
- still works fine. The workstation with the rprinter prints fine to it's local
- printer from DOS.
- Am I doing something wrong or is pserver simply incompatable with
- ELS II. The release note with pserver.vap says it works with v2.15c and
- later but doesn't specificlly mention the ELS II variant of v2.15c. I would
- appreciate hearing from someone successfully using pserver with ELS II.
- Is there any FTP'able documentation for pserver/rprinter? Our copy
- of Netware was apparently released before pserver and rprinter were implemented
- for V2.X as there is no reference to pserver or rprinter in any of the big red
- books that came with it. I've looked at all the 3rd party books I could find
- and think I'm doing everything right but I must not be.
- Also, how much does Novell charge to upgrade from ELS II to the 10
- user V2.2 or V3.1?
- Thanks,
