  13. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who has submitted to
  14. the NeXT Public Domain CD-ROM for Education! We have
  15. more than 350 MB of software for the CD-ROM at this point,
  16. representing approximately 150 individuals and institutions.
  17. I've almost recovered from the backlog of submissions over the
  18. last few days, yet more software keeps coming in. Many people
  19. have asked for extensions to polish up their submissions. We can
  20. give you until this coming Tuesday (August 18) if you need extra
  21. time. After this date, we cannot guarantee that your submissions
  22. will be included on the CD-ROM, but you are welcome to send
  23. us software for as long as you like.

  25. You probably have them memorized by now, but you will find a
  26. copy of our submission guidelines at the end of this message.

  37. WHAT IS THE NeXT PUBLIC DOMAIN CD-ROM FOR EDUCATION?
  38. The Higher Education Marketing group at NeXT Computer, Inc. is
  39. gathering educational software that is available either free of
  40. charge (freeware) or for minimal costs (shareware) and will
  41. distribute the wares via CD-ROM. There will also be a handful of
  42. commercial demos (education related) on the CD-ROM, as well
  43. some selected demonstration applications developed at NeXT which are
  44. not part of NeXT's current product lines. We will consider anything
  45. even remotely education related; we even have a section for games.

  50. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
  51. We realize that we're going to get gigabytes of stuff, and not all
  52. will fit on one CD-ROM.  NeXT will evaluate the software for
  53. stability and then select the submissions to be included on this
  54. version of the NeXT Public Domain CD-ROM for Education.
  55.  
  56. If you have software that you would like to include on the NeXT
  57. Public Domain CD-ROM for Education, please observe the following
  58. guidelines:
  59.  
  60. 1. Each application should be in a separate directory, along with a
  61. README file containing the following sections:
  62.  
  63. a. Who wrote the software and contact information (preferably
  64. Internet and US. Mail addresses) for questions, comments, bug
  65. reports, etc.
  66. b. The category that best describes the software type. (See
  67. *categories* below.)
  68. c. What the application does.
  69. d. What the application is used for at your institution (e.g. in a
  70. particular course, to illustrate a certain concept, research).
  71. e. Which NeXT release your software was developed under (2.x or
  72. NeXTSTEP Pre-Release 3).
  73. f. Detailed installation instructions (if any).
  74. g. Any other comments you would like to add.
  75.  
  76. 2. All executables must be stripped. This can either be done by
  77. typing "make install" to build the application, or by typing "strip
  78. <executable name>" in a UNIX shell.
  79.  
  80. 3. If the software is an Interface Builder palette or an Objective C
  81. class, we require a small example application and / or detailed
  82. documentation illustrating the tool's function. Please include this
  83. in the directory containing the tool.
  84.  
  85. 4. If your software is shareware, we will gladly include any
  86. licensing information that you provide for us. Please include such
  87. information in the README file. We will also place a file in a
  88. conspicuous place on the CD-ROM encouraging people to register any
  89. shareware that they use.
  90.  
  91. Note: We hope that these guidelines will make the CD-ROM much more
  92. useful for everyone in the NeXT education user community. If any
  93. guideline(s) presents a particular hardship, please contact us.

  154. envelope.  (NeXT will provide return postage.)

  156. DISTRIBUTION POLICY
  157. Of course, NeXT's education customers will receive first
  158. priority in the distribution of the CD-ROM. Beyond education,
  159. we have not established distribution plans (we'll announce
  160. something later). Of course, we'll give the CD-ROM to anyone
  161. (higher ed or otherwise) who submits materials for inclusion
  162. on the CD-ROM. NeXT will also distribute the CD-ROM this fall
  163. to attendees at the 1992 EDUCOM conference in Baltimore, MD
  164. (October 28 - 31). This is your chance for fame!  Submit now!
