Recently I saw a post describing the Mac IIf printer as being superior to
the NeXT printer. At the time I was tempted to respond but didn't. I just
read a post comparing an even lower Mac printer to a NeXT printer. (I for
the life of me can't remember what the printer was but they listed the edu price as 6 hundred and something). At this point I have to respond.
I have a unique experience. I worked in our school bookstore computer dept.
This gave me access to many well configured machines and often nothing to do.
At one time I decided to try an experiment; I wanted to print an EPS and
a TIFF image on both a Mac and a NeXT, the same images. The Mac was a Quadra
with 64MB and a IIf printer, the NeXT was a NeXTstation Color wityh 20MB and
a NeXT 400dpi printer. I won't go into the grusome stories of moving the imagesfrom one computer to the other. The result was that the NeXT won on speed
with both images (I don't have the times). The NeXT also won in image quality
even with the IIf's supposed simulated 600dpi and 64 levels of gray the NeXT
looked noticeably (sp?) better (i.e. those around who compared could tell the
difference when asked to compare). So enough of the Mac better for less b/w
printing stuff.
As a side when the same images were printed on a HP IIIp with PCL5 and Image
Enhancing the difference was less.
