- It looks like you are very close in your analysis. If the modem is set
- (as many are, especially older 2400bps modems) to default to a locked
- DCD rather than DCD following true Carrier Detect, it will produce exactly
- the symptoms you describe.

- With CU or whatever program you are using to access the modem for outbound
- dialing, attempt to set &C1&D2 (or preferably &C1l&D3) in the modem and &W
- -write it as a powerup/reset default. BTW, if this is a 68040 NeXT, you
- should use the hardware handshaking versions of each of the drivers...
- cufa and ttydfa, rather than cua/ttyda.
- The 68030 cubes, of course, with their RS-422 ports do not support these
- signal lines, however most modems do.
