  12. The machine: a Mac II that had the ROM upgraded when a Superdirve was installed.

  14. The system 7.0.1, with NO Control Devices and NO extensions (though at first
  15. there were many).

  17. The symptoms:  upon startup, many, but not all, icons are missing.  Everthing
  18. still works, but,e.g., MacMoney docs are dogeared blank pages.  NCSA Telnet
  19. icon is that of a generic app.
  20.  
  21. I restart and rebuild the desktop.  All is fine.  But if I restart again 
  22. without holding down opt-cmd keys, icons are lost.  REbuilding again
  23. restores.  Another restart without rebuilding and many are lost.
  24. Ideas?
