- This is (basically) a limitation of the OS. There are a limited
- number of blocks in any volume... If you partition the drive, you
- will get smaller block (minimum file) sizes.
-
- I partitioned my 1.2GB drive into 65 meg partitions, so I still have
- about 1 to 1.5K minimums... Of course, I also (would) have about 20
- partitions, if I used them all this way... ;)
-
- The "commonly recommended" method is to keep one or more 30-60 meg
- partitions for small data files, and larger partitions for larger
- files & apps, where losing 2-5K at the end of a file won't be
- signifigant.
-
- You can partition from within Silverlining...
-
- One other interesting option is to purchase _Times Two_ from Golden
- Triangle software. This is a SCSI driver for the Mac which works
- similar to Stacker on DOS machines. It replaces the driver with its
- own, which does compression on-the-fly. This would effectively give
- you about a 2.6GB drive for an additional $150 or so. The benefit of
- this scheme, other than doubling the disk space (a rough estimate; I'd
- expect about an additional 50-75% max), is that their driver doesn't
- use the same block scheme as the Mac (and Silverlining). If your file
- ends 'early,' it will use the remaining space, rather than leaving it
- alone.
-
- One major caveat--Times Two is a new program, and as such may be
- incompatible with certain other programs. I have no information about
- this, other than that they are testing it thoroughly.
