- The story I heard in water cooler scuttlebutt is that Motorola was having
- trouble producing the 33MHz '040 in quantity. We had the choice of waiting
- for them or going ahead with the 25MHz machine. We went. They quickly got
- the 33MHz production up and enabled us to bring out the 950 soon
- thereafter. We had intended to do the 950 originally, but couldn't.
-
- Personally, I find the 900 fast enough. I don't see the need to upgrade.
- Of course, this is my third Macintosh (well, fourth if you count the
- PowerBook - but I was talking main machines). My 512 was bought in 85
- ($2500), I upgraded it to 2MB RAM (for $1000) and then added the MacPlus
- ROM and 800K drive upgrade ($300). That suited for a while, but it
- eventually became too slow, so I got an SE/30 (a deal at $3700). I beefed
- it up to 8MB and used it like that until finally I threw in a color card,
- added a 13" monitor and upgraded it to 20MB of RAM. Finally I blew that
- off and got the Quadra. There were quite a few machines I missed while I
- stared at my lowly b&w 9" screen. I didn't whine about the cost or the
- fact that I didn't have the latest and greatest because I know what a
- fleeting goal that is. Anyone interested in always having the latest and
- greatest probably bought an Osborne. ;)
-
- Just for the record, my 2MB pre-Plus machine was the snappiest Macintosh I
- have ever used! I loaded EVERYTHING into memory. There were absolutely NO
- disk delays. Of course, I wasn't running Morph either. I believe it was
- merely MacWrite, MacPaint and MacDraw in those days.
-
- This is the price we pay for performance and capability. Cost and
- complexity.
