-
- As I understand, there is a magnetic property of disk coatings
- (called "magnetic susceptance" or "magnetic susceptibility", I think)
- which measures how easy/difficult it is to magnetize and demagnetize
- them. DD disks are fairly easy to demagnetize: if formatted as
- a HD disk, adjacent 1's and 0's are too close to each other and
- can (and probably will) erase each other over time. In order to hold
- more information, HD disks must be harder to magnetize so that
- adjacent bits won't erase each other. If your disk drive is only DD,
- it may not produce a strong enough magnetic
- field to successfully format or write to a HD disk.
-
- I've seen this happen on MS-DOS machines. I don't know if it is
- a problem with Macintoshes. My guess is that if the particular
- drive can successfully format a HD disk as DD, writes won't be a problem.
