  26. I don't understand how you can argue that a HD floppy can be formatted as
  27. 400 K, but not as 800 K? Surely the medium must be of sufficient quality to
  28. format as 800 K, when it can hold 1.4 M!
  29. Of course, I'm may be an ignorant fool (happened before), but this "out of
  30. phase" problem sounds strange.

  32. I actually know people who use HD floppies with the old 800 K drive without
  33. serious problems.

  35. However, there are two arguments against formatting HD floppies as DD.
  36. 1. HD is more expensive than DD, and you gain nothing.
  37. (Not relevant for James Wang in this case.)

  39. 2. If you ever are going to use the DD formatted disk in a SuperDrive, you
  40. will have some slightly annoying problems, since the drive uses a little
  41. hole on the floppy to identify it as a HD floppy. I think a piece of tape
  42. over the hole would ordinarily suffice to solve this problem.

  44. I certainly would be glad to have this phase problem confirmed or denied.
