- WARNING: According to Educorp, the NEC Intersect-74 CD-ROM drives are
- incompatible with at least one best-selling CD-ROM disc, namely "Spaceship
- Warlock" from Reactor.
-
- The CD-74 is NEC's new "dual-speed" drive which plays audio CD's at normal
- speeds but shifts up to about twice as fast when accessing digital tracks.
- Educorp and other dealers have been heavily advertising this drive which
- is part of the "NEC Gallery" package -- a bundle which includes the drive,
- software, speakers, and several CD titles. I bought mine at MacWorld
- last week from Educorp.
-
- Alas, yesterday I called Educorp and tried to order Spaceship Warlock, and
- was told that the CD-74 was incompatible.
-
- Comments:
-
- 1) Why, one wonders, didn't NEC test this drive with what is probably the
- best-selling CD disc before releasing it to the world?
-
- 2) Why was Educorp enthusiastically selling this drive at MacWorld when they
- already knew (according to the Educorp tech support person I talked to) about
- the incompatibility?
-
- 3) To be fair, Educorp is offering to substitute another drive. However, I
- bought the 74 because of the speed advantages and I think I'll hang on for
- a while before throwing in the towel. The drive has a 2-year warranty.
-
- Caveat emptor!
