- First of all, let's straighten a few things out. What you see when you
- use your Macintosh is not the Mac OS. It is a graphical user interface
- to the Mac OS (like MS Windows is a graphical user interface to DOS). I
- think we all agree that DOS is a pain because of its many limitations
- but the Mac OS has a lot of downsides too. Neither of them is a very
- intelligent operating system. Eventually it is rumored that Apple is
- going to rewrite system 7 in a new micro kernal based architecture.
- What this technical mumbo jumbo means is that the new system 7 will be a
- much smarter operating system like Unix (this is also the goal of
- Windows NT). Due to the new features that this system 7 operating
- system would offer, things like unrecoverable system errors should
- disappear (when an appplictation goes haywire, instead of crashing the
- entire computer, the application itself will just die). I personally
- love the Macintosh user interface its operating system and Mac OS is
- probably better than DOS in several ways but it still is very lacking in
- others.
-
- Just my two cents.

- BTW, one severe limitation, in my opinion, of the current Mac OS is that
- there is no command line interface to the operating system. There are
- some times when it is a real pain to have to do everthing via point and
- click where it would be nicer to have a direct command line interface to
- the OS (like DOS). Eventually this (to a degree) will be offered once
- Apple releases it's scripting language and interface.
