- In answer to the question about real-world uses of 24-bit vs 8-bit,
- particularly for scientific data analysis, I can comment. On the specific
- hardware mentioned I cannot.
-
- I am using 2 monitors actually, a 19" running in 24-bits from an
- accelerated card (SuperMac Spectrum 24 PDQ), and a 13" running in 8-bit
- mode from an Apple 8.24 card. I almost never change these allocations,
- though both can run in anything up to 24-bits. The big 24-bit screen is
- noticably faster than the other, though of course it is accelerated.
-
- My work involves a lot of scientific data analysis, often with large 2D
- data sets from our earth-observation satellite ERS-1. I am particularly
- concerned with global wind and wave fields, and usually have both types of map
- on-screen simultaneously. I use 8-bit colour mapping for the data, but
- since the coding is different for each parameter this has to be done in
- 24-bit mode, otherwise only the foreground window gets the right colours.
-
- Sorry if this is bit detailed, but in my view it is a strong argument for
- 24-bits. It also avoids the anoying colour shifts when switching contexts
- (unless you always use the system palette).
-
- I also use Photoshop for preparing these things for publication, where again
- the 24-bit mode is essential. In this way for example one can use 2 8-bit
- colour maps which only differ in saturation---a useful technique for
- highlighting.
-
- I would definitely go for 24-bit, even with the speed penalty (you can
- always turn it off). These days science uses high-quality colour graphics
- too.
-
- Hope this helps,
-
