- I currently have just an 8-bit card on my IIci, driving an Apple 13" RGB
- (actually, I'm using the on-board 8-bit videio). I also have a Radius Pivot,
- monochrome. In two years of this config, I've never felt the need for
- 24-bit color, doing mainly text processing (natch), Mathematica, and the like.
- The dithering of QuickDraw is good enough to let 8-bit systems give
- convincing results (but then I'm red-green colorblind, so what do I know?).
-
- However, this all changed when I got Fractal Designs' "Painter" and a Wacom
- graphics tablet. While the dithering is good, I can now see the compromises.
- I'm thinking of buying a 24-bit card.
-
- In your case, paying the extra $200 is cheap, if you plan to do anything
- that really strains the color system (Painter does, Mathematica does not,
- for example...by "strain" I really mean "makes full use of"). My only
- caveat is that the 24-bit processing will slow down your system. Also,
- if you plan to get another Mac, like a IIxx, will the SE/30 card fit?
-
- Hope this helps.
