- There is a review of three floptical drives, all based on the same
- mechanism, in the latest MacWorld. The things that bugged me the most
- were the following:
-
- o The disks come unformatted, and take approx. 23 minutes to format
-
- o It takes about 17 seconds to mount a floptical disk when you stick it in
- the drive (4 seconds for an HD disk).
-
- o The disks are considerably slower than a hard disk, but somewhat faster
- than a floppy for floptical disks, and *slower* than an HD floppy drive
- for HD floppies.
-
- o The media cost (per MB) is higher than HD floppies, Syquest, Bernoulli,
- and other types of removable media.
-
- o Some of the drives have problems formatting HD floppies, or will attempt
- to format an 800K floppy if you accidentally stick one in (none of them are
- actually capable of using 800K floppies).
