  23. The 2.0 EN/SC drivers/extension did not fix the problem I've been seeing
  24. here.  On my boss's IIci, the EN/SC drivers seem to leave the boot-time
  25. environment in an unclean state.  If the EN/SC is selected at boot time
  26. (using EtherTalk Phase II), several INITs don't run properly.  DiskLock
  27. reports that it has been corrupted by a bug or virus;  QuicKeys II
  28. crashes.

  30. These crashes occur whether or not the EN/SC INIT is present at boot
  31. time.  They do not occur if the machine is booted with LocalTalk
  32. networking selected, and EtherTalk Phase II is selected thereafter.

  34. This is the second set of problems I've had with the EN/SC.  The first
  35. problem is that it's incompatible with certain third-party disk driver
  36. programs... specifically, with older versions of Apollyonics' SCSI
  37. Director (which is OEMed by APS as "Alliance Power Tools").  If the
  38. Apollyonics driver is present on any of the powered-up hard disks at
  39. boot time, then the Mac hangs at a very early stage of the boot process,
  40. and the yellow "power" light on the EN/SC goes off and stays off.
  41.  
  42. Apollyonics has fixed this incompatibility in the latest version of
  43. their software.
  44.  
  45. My impression is that the SCSI implementation in the Asante EN/SC is
  46. deficient in a number of ways.  It doesn't respond to an INQUIRY command
  47. (bad manners!) and the EN/SC INIT must be using some other sort of
  48. technique to locate the device.  The drivers (even the current ones)
  49. still seem to be distinctly buggy.

  51. I told my boss to cancel the follow-on order for two more EN/SCs.  We'll
  52. use the NuBus cards instead.  I'd been hoping to save a slot per IIci by
  53. using the EN/SC, but they're just too buggy.
