- DO NOT attempt to use Dayna's software NOR Farallon's and print to a
- shared AppleTalk printer. Put simply, these products only work in
- theory. Dayna's software is not compatible with Windows 3.0 or 3.1
- and they will never upgrade it (they told me so). As a matter of
- fact, Dayna will tell you to use Farallon's software.
-
- OK, so now you're ready, right? Wrong. Farallon's software "works"
- with Windows but does not support background printing via Print
- Manager (Windows version of Print Monitor). If someone else is using
- the printer, then Windows will sit around waiting forever and you
- will not be able to use the computer. Eventually, it will quit.
-
- Even when the printer is free, you will periodically lose part of
- your document in the output. A 2.5 megabyte printer can handle
- roughly 6 pages, no more. The more memory, the more pages you can
- print. The more PCs trying to share the printer, the more problems
- you will have since, even with the Farallon software, they don't
- really speak Appletalk completely (i.e. they can't automatically
- wait for a network printer like a Mac can).

-
- Extended Systems also sells board that support Appletalk directly.
- You will still need a printer-sharing device on the PC end, which
- Extended System also sells. This solution is expensive, but it will
- work.
-
- Incidentally, I have spent over 20 hours on the Farallon solution,
- with Farallon tech supoort, Microsoft tech support, Dayna tech
- support, etc. I didn't want to give up on it because it should work
- in theory. Theory and practice are not the same thing, though.
