- I'm not sure if I understand the exact need here, but a few very effective
- techniques for keeping users from making unauthorized copies of software
- are:
-
- 1. If the software is on a local hard drive, use MacTools (I use version
- 1.2) FileEdit and click the "Protect" box on anything you don't want
- copied. This technique won't stop people who have their own copy of
- FileEdit, but it certainly stops Finder copying.
-
- 2. If the software is on a Netware file server, use the CopyInhibit flag.
- Perhaps other systems such as Appleshare Server and Banyan Vines can do
- this too, but I don't use them, so I don't know.
-
- 3. Use Keyserver from Sassafras Software. This product provides copy
- protection (you can copy the programs, but they won't run on other Macs
- unless you provide an authorized key). It also provides license control
- by allowing you to limit the number of launches (keys) for any program.
- Obviously most useful for a networked environment.
