- Just got the MediaVision multimedia upgrade kit 16 (contains PAS-16, NEC
- internal CD-ROM player, and loads of software) last week from PC Connection
- -- these apparently arrived new from MediaVision and were shipped straight
- out to us back-ordered customers. Thanks to Charles Thompson's most
- excellent PAS-16 FAQ article, I was able to get things up and going with
- next to no problem at all. *Major* thanks, Charles.
-
- Anyway, there were a few things in the MultiMedia package that I though
- folks might like to know about, particularly changes to the MediaVision
- hardware/software setup:
-
- * The major change is that they're shipping NEC 84J CDR drives instead of
- 83Js. Not a big surprise, as NEC's been switching to the X4 CDR line
- all over the place. Also not much of a real change; I asked around
- before buying the MultiMedia kit, and the difference between the X3 and
- X4 lines is pretty miminal, from what I've understood. The specs are
- just about the same.
-
- PS It is a bitch to get a NEC 84J into a Gateway Tower case. Never again.
-
- * Strangely enough, after getting everything up and working, I happened to
- reboot my Gateway 2000 without the MVSOUND.SYS file, and Windows *still*
- came up with its Windows Startup sound through the speakers connected to
- my PAS-16. I thought it needed MVSOUND.SYS to work -- but I'm not sure.
- I may experiment with this more, later. (MVSOUND.SYS is a pretty small
- driver, and I don't grudge it it's high memory space.)
-
- * The Gateway has a ATI Graphics Ultra card; the TSLCDR.SYS driver I have
- still detects two SCSI addresses, and not one; but so far, I haven't had
- any problems wiht digital audio, and no instances of the "red screen"
- problem on Win 3.1. I'll check to see that it's later than 1.46B.
-
- Again, that PAS-16 FAQ list gave me a lot of piece-O'-mind -- thanks to all
- who contributed, and Charles for organizing.
