- And another reason that people want shareware/public domain stuff is that
- they can't use or don't want all the features in the commercial software.
- A prime example is Winfax Pro. This is a program that causes your faxmodem
- to act like a printer under windows. It also allows background receiving
- of faxes and comes with filters to convert the fax into various picture
- formats. Some of the packages come with OCR software. The developer wants
- $120 list (about $70, mail-order) for this program. But, many fax modems
- and most older Notebook fax modems can't receive faxes; they can only send.
- So why should the owners of such boards buy an expensive program that they
- are only able to use less than half of its features?
-
- Also, word processors are incredibly powerful, but would you use word for
- windows just to create some source code for a class assignment or for work?
- I don't think so. You'd want a simple, pure ASCII editor that allows
- copy/cut/paste and maybe a search/replace feature.
-
- Besides, most commerical software seems to be way over-priced for their per-
- formance. Look at many games. I've seen Gunship 2000 (if I remember the
- title correctly) that was $50 when it first came out. It's now on the <$10
- shelf at several software stores. It wasn't worth $50 since it had cheesy
- graphis and sound, but it is worth $10.
