- I have an Alpha Microsystems Videotrax backup card.
-
- It has some pluses and minuses, I will simply list these below.
- If you want more information please feel free to email me.
-
- + It is a cheap form of backup since I can buy a 160 minute very
- high quality videotape for about $8.00 and this will hold about
- 80 megabytes.
-
- - The software which they supply, does not do multiple volumes so the
- maximum that can be done in a single backup is about 80 MB.
-
- + It is very reliable if you use a high quality videotape. I use BASF
- extra quality Chrome T160 videocassettes. When I tried cheaper ones
- the verify pass indicated an unacceptable number of errors. I know about
- reliability from the verify pass and from a complete restore that I
- have done once.
-
- - The verify pass with the supplied software is good for determining if
- the whole backup is good, but it is horrible for determining the quality
- of a single file. This is because files are listed as they are
- verified, and bad ones are listed in redd, but they are not saved in a
- log file of any type. If you don't watch the verify, you will not know
- which files were bad.
-
- - It is slow. If you fill a 160 minute tape with about 80 MB of data it
- will take about 160 minutes to write and 160 minutes to verify. Since
- VCR's do not do a verify while writing these are two separate steps.
- Alpha sells a computer-controlled VCR, but if you use your own you
- must do the rewinding and playback.
-
- -To my knowledge there is no standard videotape format. If just your
- hard disk crashes you have a reliable backup, but if your computer
- burns or is stolen you will need and identical card to restore the data.
-
- - Alpha microsystems has never responded to my letters and they do not
- supply a phone number.
-
- On my list you may note that the minuses outnumber the pluses, but the pluses
- are significant. I really want to replace my videotrax system with
- something better but given constratints on my mondy I find that it is a
- workable system.
