- The NEC V20/30 are developments of the 8088/6 CPU, that normally drop in
- to the intel socket - at least I have had no problems. The V20 for the
- 8088, and the V30 for the 8086. They execute most instructions faster,
- for the same clock rate, though string operations are slower. They also
- include all the instructions added to the 80186 and 80286 Real mode, as
- well as a few extra & an 8080 emulation mode.
-
- Sony are a second source for the V20/30. There are no hardware restrictions,
- so far as I know on replacing the 8088/6 with a V20/30, but V20/30 based
- systems often have a 50% duty cycle clock whereas the 8088/6 requires a 33%
- clock - so cannnot be used.
-
- The NEC (SONY) parts are the only CPU upgrades available, unless you buy
- a 'turbo' board where a better spec CPU operates but passes keyboard, screen
- and disk data through your original PC & CPU. These used to be really
- popular so if they are no longer made you could possibly pick up a second
- hand one.
