- Well, it's not all that bad. The software you are talking
- about is a simple little program which initializes the Cyrix
- cache controller. If none of the "extra" signals are
- available on the m'board (and there are some good reasons why
- at least a couple of them would be jumpered away for the AMD,
- Intel, or C&T 386 chips), AND if the 386 socket is feed the
- HOLD signal (for DMA), then Cyrix has provided methods to
- still use their chip (wish the heck Intel would be so
- thoughful).
-
- As for the performance loss due to the "BARB" cache flush
- during DMA, it depends on whether you have hidden refresh and
- whether you do a lots of DMA reads from a DMA device (floppy,
- LAN adapter, SCSI adapter, video board, 3270 emulator, etc.)
- in comparison to the number of writes (writes have to flush the
- Cyrix cache regardless of the special signals). For most
- applications, the Cyrix does an amazing job... no wonder C&T
- decided to bow out of the market. I'm sure that if AMD had
- invested in as much R&D as C&T they would be out, too. Cyrix
- is really hard to beat... I can't wait to see what they pull
- out from their sleeve in response to the Intel P5!
