- I convinced my company two years ago that we should buy Gateway 2000
- computers since they provided the best proce/performance at the time.
- Their response was prompt, their people courteous, their systems arrived
- on time, etc. etc.
-
- Lately, they've been a pain. The last straw for me was a problem I had
- with a 386SX desktop. Their standard configuration for these babies is
- on-board VGA, on-board IDE controller. We needed to be able to swap disks
- in and out amongst various other machines, so we asked for ESDI drives in
- them (to match our other machines). They obliged, for a price of course.
- Things rolled along merrily until last week, three months after the warranty
- expired (of course!).
-
- I traced the problem to a faulty Ultrastor disk controller.
-
- When I called up the Tech Support folks, they informed me that my warranty
- had expired. No problem, I said, just ship me an Ultrastor controller,
- and I'll pay you for it. Sorry, he says, can't do that; we don't support
- the UltraStor any more!
-
- Object Lesson: Gateway 2000 shifts allegiance like the wind. Since they
- buy the cheapest components around, there's no guarantee that you will get
- support even a year after you purchase your system.
-
- Bottom Line: If you like cheap systems, Gateway is fine. But be aware
- that you have no guarantee of obtaining replacement parts from them if they
- decide to stop supplying certain components. You'll have to go to a
- different source.
-
- DISCLAIMER: I like their prices, their systems are just OK, nothing great.
