-
- Yes -- sort of.
-
- I have a small box that I paid about $100 for that will answer the phone,
- listen for a FAX machine signal, and generate a "pseudo ring" on an output
- port [1]. The output port [1] is attached to a modem in auto-answer mode.
- The modem is currently set to answer on about the 4th ring [simulated
- ring, actually]. If prior to the modem picking up, the box detects a
- FAX machine signal, it will generate a simulated ring on a second output
- port [2], to which a FAX machine is attached. If either the modem
- or FAX machine answers, the other is blocked out.
-
- The problem is that some folks have trouble dialing in to my modem because
- it doesn't answer right away, and their communications software times out.
- [If they knew how to configure their software/modem they could work around
- the problem].
-
- Another problem is that some [older] FAXes aren't smart enough to signal
- that they have a FAX to transmit, so some FAX machines get connected to
- my modem rather than my FAX.
-
- My box also has a third port that can be accessed by pressing a touch-
- tone while the box is waiting for the modem to pick up or to hear a
- FAX signal, but I haven't used this feature.
-
- I also think that my box is able to detect reverse-modem signaling and
- distinguish between an incoming modem and FAX that way, and if neither
- signal is heard, then transfer the call to a voice phone/answering
- machine. I haven't tried this option, but based on my experience
- with some FAX calls not being properly categorized, I suspect that
- I might get a lot of messages from FAX machines on my answering machine.
-
-
- PC Magazine did a review of these automatic switches a while back (1-2
- years).
-
- I don't know what the current state of the art is.
-
- If anyone knows of a product that can detect incoming modem, FAX,
- and also provide voice-mail for OS/2 2.0 I would greatly appreciate
- hearing about it.
