- First, one thing I left off. With out partitions you have to export
- the WHOLE file system. Yes, you can only mount a directory, but you
- still have to export the whole thing.
-
- Second, yes you can dd from one machine to the next. IF you can keep
- your machines close to the same. In our local enviorment we can't.
- So the clobber /tmp and save what you can is nice.
-
- Third, a problem we just had could have been pervented or at least
- discovered sooner. And that is in a cluster the root disk which is
- being shared. Got filled up with log files from all the clients. Had
- the clients been in there own partition it would have been noticed
- earlier.
-
- Fourth, my experiance with /tmp filling up root is that not much takes
- it well due to the fact that a lot of unix things run in user space.
- And most of the time the user doesn't know what happend and things
- start going south and you can't get mail and your editor can't
- save....
-
- Fifth, I know that partitions were never in HP-UX but they have been
- in UNIX for a long time. And when your hooking gigabyte disks to your
- workstation, one can make use of them.
