The LaserJet memory in the specs (128K in this case) isn't used for buffering
input and flow control. That's handled by dedicated memory (I assume) on the
interface hardware. The 128K is to layout the page image description so that
the printer knows what goes where on the page when it actually prints the
finished page. That memory is NOT sufficient, for example, to print an 8x10
inch graphics picture at 300 dpi. That means that bit-mapped graphics in the
laserjet has to fit into that 128K. You can print with lower resolution or
using less of the page at the higher resolutions. I've found that using 75
dpi seems to always work for full page images and 150 dpi works quite often,
but not every time, depending I think on the coverage of the page with
graphics.
Newer laserjets also support soft fonts downloaded from the host (128K does NOT)and those are also stored in whatever memory is available in the laserjet too.
Font cartridges, however, do not use any of the memory in the printer. They
have the font in ROM and the printer reads it directly from there.
I hope this explanation helps. Good luck!
